A fair turnout of 23 players made it to the tee at Staverton Park for the first golf day of 2018, including a new member and a couple of faces we haven't seen for a while.
The forecast was for very cold weather, but with the sun out it wasn't too bad. The course had been prepared for a Winter Open competition the day before so was in very good condition. With the winter tees making the course shorter and the winter "pick and place" rule making things easier, some high scores were expected. However, scoring was very mixed, ranging from just 16 to a massive 42 points.
The new rule which allows higher handicap players an extra shot on the nearest the pin holes provided a talking point. On the 4th, Ace was in the hole for 2, meaning lower handicappers needed a hole-in-one just to tie. On the 12th, Lea was on the green with his tee shot, so just had to knock his first putt fairly close, which he duly did. On the 18th, Jason managed a victory for the lower handicappers when finishing nearest in 2.
Stableford winner on the day with a hugely impressive 42 points (including four 4-pointers and a blob on the last!) was Neil Fuller. Runner-up was Smithy on 39, closely followed by new member Roger on 38. All 3 players are likely to receive a handicap cut for the next outing.
